BERKELEY --- Randy Ziraldo, a longtime former member of the California track & field coaching staff, passed away Feb. 12 at the age of 65.
Ziraldo began his tenure with the Golden Bears in 1989 after a decade-plus as a scholastic coach in Michigan, Indiana and California. He spent nearly 15 seasons coaching the Golden Bears, training several All-Americans and NCAA qualifiers during his tenure.
“Randy was a very dedicated coach and a great person as well,” Cal Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval said of Ziraldo. “He believed in the mission and vision of Cal Athletics and the University. As a coach, he was a great mentor to all his athletes and his sense of humor kept us all balanced during workouts and meets.”
After coaching at Cal, Ziraldo spent time back in the high school ranks at Redwood High School in Visalia before working at the University of Indianapolis for the last four seasons. In total, Ziraldo served as a track coach, mentor and teacher for over 40 years.
Ziraldo is survived by his mother Yvette, his two sons Vincent & Arturo, and many siblings and cousins.
