USC came out of the blocks strongly in the season-opening UW Indoor Preview Meet in Seattle, Wash. today (Jan. 16), winning six events, setting one school record and two meet records. "Today was a solid day of competition," said USC Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert. "We had several great opening marks and for the most part everyone opened up ahead of where they were last year. The jumpers were very impressive today because the marks were earned using half approaches in order to work on the technical aspects of their events." "We held back some of the sprinters so they can rest and prepare for the meet in Birmingham next week and the rest of the season," added Smith Gilbert. "We have been experiencing a few nagging injuries here and there. I was exited to see the throwers compete and they did an outstanding job. This week we will go back to the drawing board and get ready for next week's competition." Senior Jaide Stepter won the women's 400m dash with a meet-record time of 53.18.
