Cats sweep indoor track invitational

A strong day in the field and on the track propelled Kansas State’s men’s and women’s track teams to victories in the K-State Winter Invitational on Saturday at Ahearn Field House.
The men’s side finished with 67 total points, while the women finished with 66 points.
“I feel like we hit a lot of really good marks today,” K-State head track and field coach Cliff Rovelto said. “I think in general, the throwers looked very good. There were some great marks and some personal records. There really was not a whole lot that was disappointing. Most of it was very encouraging and it is very encouraging to see what they are doing at this point.”
In the field, the throwers took first place in three out of four events. Senior Brady Grunder took first in the weight throw with a mark of 19.79m/64-11.25, moving him to fourth in school history in the event, while junior Mitch Dixon’s throw of 18.49m/60-08.00 moved him into 10th place in school history.
Junior Janee’ Kassanavoid also recorded a first-place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 17.95m/58-10.75.
Freshman Brett Neelly added a first-place finish in shot put with a throw of 16.88m/55-04.75, while senior Dani Winter’s throw of 17.52m/57-05.75 earned her second place and second in the top-10 for shot put.
The jumpers also had a strong day, as junior Miles Bearden set a personal record in the high jump with a mark of 2.18m/7-01.75 and sophomore Rhizlane Siba placed first in the same event, jumping 1.78m/5-10.00. Senior Alyssa Kelly won the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.75m/18-10.50.
Sophomore Megan Vanderpool posted a mark of 3.66m/12-00.00 to take first place in the women’s pole vault to move her into sixth place in school history, while pole vaulter Zack Supple took fourth with a mark of 4.77m/15-07.75.
On the track, senior Tia’ Gamble set a school, Ahearn and meet record in the 300-meter dash with a time of 39.29.
Sophomore Keiteyana Parks finished second, posting a 40.27 mark that moved her into fourth place in the top 10.
Former Wildcat Carlos Rodriguez won the 300-meter dash on the men’s side with a time of 34.21, while freshman Devie Freeman took second with a time of 34.84. Freeman’s mark moved him into fifth place in school history.
Rodriguez also took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.81, just ahead of second-place finisher Terrell Smith.
Senior Akela Jones recorded a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.21 and tying her for fifth in school history. Former Wildcat Erica Twiss finished second in the same event with a time of 8.54.
In the distance events, Marija Stambolic posted a mark of 3:02.75 in the 1,000-meter run to finish second, while Chris Sandquist finished third with a time of 2:34.48.
Kain Ellis was the only competitor in the mile and recorded a time of 4:16.91.
Junior Kevin Jantsch recorded a second-place finish in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:12.00.
K-State returns to action on Jan. 9, as it hosts the Wildcat Invitational at Ahearn Field House. Field events will begin at 11 a.m., with track events following at 2 p.m.
