WOMEN 9TH, MEN 10TH AT BIG SKY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Amanda Garcia led the women and Sam Scheuer posted the fastest time for the men to pace Sacramento State at the Big Sky Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The Hornet women finished in ninth place while the men's team was 10th.

Weber State won the women's title with 39 points, claiming the team's fourth title in the last five years. The Wildcats were trailed by Eastern Washington (75) and Northern Arizona (85) in the top three. Host Southern Utah snapped Northern Arizona's dominance to win the men's team title. The Thunderbirds scored 26 points while NAU had 43 and Weber State scored 96 to complete the top three.

Garcia led the Sacramento State women for the first time this season. The senior ran 18:50.6 to place 14th over the 5K course. Chloe Berlioux ranked second among the Hornets and was 26th overall with a time of 19:11.4. Freshman Gracie Albano completed the race in 20:02.2 to place 57th. Haley Heinemann was 6-th in 20:05.2 and Amy Quinones was one second back (20:06.2) to place 62nd.

Scheuer led the Hornets for the first time this season, completing the 8K course in 27:13.5 to finish in 40th place. Senior Jacob Huston was close behind in 27:28/3 to place 48th. Ryan Salcido and Ricardo Avila finished within three-tenths of a second of each other. Salcido ran 27:46.3 and Avila crossed in 27:46.6 to place 52nd and 53rd, respectively. The final time towards the team total came from Christian Gonzales who placed 73rd after running 28:35.6.

Montana freshman Makena Morley was the women's individual champion. Morley ran 17:45.9 to finish 10 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor. Southern Utah's Hayden Hawks and Mike Tate had the top two times for the men. Hawks ran 24:56.6 and Tate was second in 25:01.1.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Doc Adams Challenge at UC Davis on Nov. 7. The team will then head to Seattle for the NCAA West Regional on Nov. 13.
