No. 14 Georgetown Men’s Cross Country Wins Paul Short Invitational

WASHINGTON - The No. 14 Georgetown men’s cross country team won the Paul Short Invitational gold race on Friday afternoon in cold and rainy conditions in Bethlehem, Pa. With a score of 37 points (3/5/6/10/13), the Hoyas edged out conference foe No. 7 Villanova (56 points) despite the Wildcats going 1/2/4. Rounding out the top five in the meet hosted by Lehigh University were the University of Guelph (160), Buffalo (176) and Lock Haven (178). “I was extremely proud of the men today,” Men’s Distance Coach Brandon Bonsey said. “That was a great Villanova team that we beat. We have known how good this team is for a long time and to go out today and prove that was a lot of fun. Jon Green and Darren Fahy did an amazing job of leading us and Christian Alvarado, Mike Lederhouse and Connor Sheryak ran their best cross country races at Georgetown.” Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John’s High School) led the Hoyas on the 8,000-meter course. A junior champion in the 10,000-meter, Green took third place with a time of 23:59, mere seconds behind seasoned Villanova runners Patrick Tiernan (23:55) and Jordy Williamsz (23:58). Track All-American Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) was the second Hoya to cross the finish line with a time of 24:04, good enough for fifth place with Michael Lederhouse (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) close behind in sixth place (24:09).
In just his first cross country season, Christian Alvarado (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) was the fourth point scorer for the Hoyas with a 10th-place time of 24:14. Rounding out the point scorers was Connor Sheryak (), clocking 24:24 for 13th place. “Our depth really shined through today,” Bonsey explained. “As good as we were, I know we can run a lot better. We showed today that we can run with any team in the country.” Not only did the Hoyas win the race, but they were able to showcase their dominating depth. As the Hoyas and Wildcats traded the top six spots, it was all the Blue & Gray after that. With the top five point scorers among the top 13, Georgetown was able to put 10 runners among the top 50 overall. More impressive, nine Hoya runners finished ahead of VU’s fifth point scorer (39th place overall). Both the men’s team and the No. 9 women’s team will take next weekend off and return for the 2015 Pre-National Meet held in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday, October 17.
