SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- During the morning session of Day 1 at the 2015 North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Senior Area Championships at Estadio Nacional, the husband-wife duo of Russ and Kara Winger had a field day with golds in the discus and javelin to stand out among top finishes by Team USA in sprint and hurdle qualifying.
Russ Winger (Colorado Springs, Colorado) won gold in the discus final, throwing 60.68m/199-1 and grabbing the qualifying spot for the World Championships that comes with the NACAC title. The IAAF allows Area Champions, in this case NACAC, to use their wins as qualifying performances for Beijing. Andrew Evans (Portage, Michigan) was the runner-up with a best of 59.32m/194-7.
In the javelin, Kara Winger (Colorado Springs, Colorado) interspersed fair and foul throws to win the event with a mark of 60.34m/197-11 in round six. Hannah Carson (Chandler, Arizona) claimed bronze with a best of 50.34m/165-2.
JaCorian Duffield (San Antonio, Texas) became the champion in men’s high jump after clearing 2.25m/7-4.5 on his first attempt at that height. He was clear first time over the first four bars and passed 2.28m/7-5.75 before missing three times at 2.31m/7-7. U.S. teammate Jesse Williams (Eugene, Oregon) got over 2.10m/6-10.75 and 2.15m/7-0.5 on first attempts, but he missed three times at 2.20m/7-2.5 to finish just outside of medal contention in fourth.
Team USA’s Lynnika Pitts (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) was third in the triple jump with a very windy 14.02m/46-0 and Christina Epps (Morristown, New Jersey) was ninth also with a windy 12.81m/42-0.5 on her first and only trip down the runway.
BeeJay Lee (Chino, California) and Remontay McClain (Irvine, California) moved on to the final of the men’s 100 after running windy times of 10.00 and 10.12, respectively, in the semifinal. Both men were automatic qualifiers out of the heats, with Lee clocking 10.23 for first place in heat 3 and McClain making his finish in 10.15 for second place in heat 4. Lee had the fourth best time of the day and McClain had the sixth.
In women’s 400m qualifying, Courtney Okolo (Carrollton, Texas) ran a season-best 50.82 to finish top in heat 1, and Kala Funderburk (St. Petersburg, Florida) did the same in heat 3, finishing in 51.73 to give Team USA the best two finishes of the day.
On the men’s side, both James Harris (Lanett, Alabama) and Marcus Chambers (Tacoma, Washington) were third in their heats and did not make finals with Harris’ time of 45.24 and Chambers in at 45.96.
Barbara Pierre (Knightdale, North Carolina) and Charonda Williams (Apopka, Florida) were the third and fourth fastest women respectively in 100m rounds. Pierre ran 11.08 for first in heat 1, and Williams was second in her heat at 11.06
Lolo Jones (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) had the fastest time in the heats of the women’s 100mH with a slightly-windy 12.82 to take the third section, and Tenaya Jones (Rowlett, Texas) was the third-fastest advancer with a 13.05 to win heat 1.
The only U.S. representative in the men’s 110mH, Ray Stewart (Oakland, California) qualified to the final after clocking 13.59 to finish fourth in heat 2.
