Nine golds for Team USA on Day Two at NACAC Senior Championships

8/8/2015

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Before torrential rain forced meet organizers to postpone the remaining three events until Sunday, Team USA dominated the medal stand Saturday at the NACAC Senior Area Championships at the Estadio Nacional. U.S. athletes won nine events and there were seven 1-2 finishes for the Americans.

No one was able to keep up with the Joneses in the women’s 100mH final, as Lolo Jones (Prairieville, Louisiana) rode a very strong tailwind to gold in 12.63, just ahead of teammate Tenaya Jones (Rowlett, Texas), who grabbed silver in 12.68.

The second medal sweep of the day came in the women’s 400 final, where Courtney Okolo (Carrollton, Texas) ran away with the gold in 51.57, and Kala Funderburk (St. Petersburg, Florida) was in silver medal position in 52.22. Okolo set a meet record of 50.82 in Friday’s prelims.

Amber Campbell (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) shattered the meet record in the women’s hammer final with a best of 72.41m/237-6 in the third round. It was her second-farthest throw of the year and DeAnna Price (Carbondale, Illinois) also topped 70m with a 71.27m/233-10 in round three for the silver.

Blasting out of the blocks and never seriously challenged, Barbara Pierre (Knightdale, North Carolina) took gold in the women’s 100 in 11.12 to lead another 1-2 finish for the U.S. Charonda Williams (Apopka, Florida) held off Trinidad’s Michelle-Lee Ahye by .01 to take silver in 11.21.
From the start the women’s 1500 final was an all-American affair as Rachel Schneider (Washington, D.C.) and Shelby Houlihan (Tempe, Arizona) led a pack of four runners. After 800 meters, the duo started to pull away and ran stride for stride until Schneider made a powerful move at the bell to extend her lead and win in 4:14.78, with Houlihan second in 4:16.61.

Two more metric mile medals quickly followed in the men’s 1500 final, where Andrew Wheating (Eugene, Oregon) had just a slightly better finish to hold off Daniel Winn (Eugene, Oregon) and grab the gold in 3:45.08, .35 ahead of Winn’s 3:45.43.

A veteran U.S. duo swept the medals in the women’s shot put, with Jill Camarena-Williams (Tucson, Arizona) throwing 18.62m/61-1.25 in the fourth round to win and Jeneva Stevens (Carbondale, Illinois) recording a best of 17.61m/57-9.5 in the second round for silver.
The field in the men’s 100 final got away evenly and as they neared the line, Remontay McClain (Irvine, California) edged ahead to capture the gold for the U.S. in 10.09. BeeJay Lee (Chino, California) ended up eighth in 10.36.

Enjoying the best competitive series of his career in the men’s long jump final, Cameron Burrell (Missouri City, Texas) set a lifetime best of 8.06m/26-5.5 in round four to finish atop the podium. Burrell had three jumps better than 8.00m/26-3 and won by more than six inches. Demarcus Simpson (Lafayette, Georgia) was fourth with a best of 7.59m/24-11.

Running in tandem through the first half of the men’s 5000 final, Lopez Lomong (Lake Oswego, Oregon) and Jeff See (Greenville, South Carolina) came through the 3K mark in just over 8:36 in a group with the two Mexican runners. By the end of the next kilometer, See had dropped back and eventually dropped out, but Lomong forged ahead and threw down a sub-2:00 final 800 to win decisively in 13:57.53.

Ray Stewart (Oakland, California) was fifth in the men’s 110mH final in 13.50.

The men’s javelin was suspended midway through the competition and will resume tomorrow, and both 4x100 relays will be contested at the beginning of the Sunday session.
