Senior Tatum Souza (Napa HS 2010; UCLA 2015) leads Pac-12 Heptathlon after Day 1

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA multi athletes completed day one of the Pac-12 Championships, Saturday at Drake Stadium.
Senior Tatum Souza has put herself in great position heading into the final day of competition as she leads the field with 3,407 points.
Souza catapulted into the scoring in just her second event as she cleared a lifetime best of 5-7 to tie for the lead in the high jump. She then continued the momentum in the shot put as she uncorked a lifetime best of 45-5.25 to win the event.
Senior Alexis Walker currently sits in seventh place with 3,104 points. Her biggest point total came in the 100 hurdles where she started off the day with 964 points on the strength of a time of 14.10.
Sophomore Monique Van compiled 2,677 points to currently reside in 13th place. Van opened with a season best 15.24 in the 100 hurdles for a high of 810 points.
In the men’s competition senior Marcus Nilsson is currently in seventh place with 3,698 points while freshman Zack Bornstein is in 10th with 3,654 points.
The Bruins came up big in the shot put as they finished 2-3 in the event. Nilsson scored 730 points on a throw of 46-0.50 while Bornstein followed with a mark of 43-7.
Nilsson scored the most points in the opener in the 100m where he ran an 11.45 to score 763 points. Bornstein ran an 11.34 to tally a day high of 786 points.
Championship Sunday will begin at 11 a.m. PT with the 110 hurdles. The heptathlon final day will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the long jump.
