Long Beach, Calif. - Track and Field lost a tremendous leader last Friday with the death of Dave Rodda, who passed away following a heart attack. A pioneer for women's track and field, Rodda's passion for the sport was nearly unmatched. Following his retirement as the Director of Recreation and Community Services in Lakewood, Rodda returned to his Alma Mater of Long Beach State and spent the next 14 years serving as an assistant coach with Beach track and Field. In that time, Rodda helped lead the 49ers to four Big West Championships, and helped coach 11 Big West champions, 43 All-Big West performers, and eight All-Americans. Rodda was inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006, owing to his success not only at LBSU but through national and international competition as well. Rodda coached 12 Olympians and worked as a Team USA assistant coach through two Olympic cycles, as well as serving as the head coach for the 1991 World Championships and 1995 Pan American Games. Following his resignation last year, head coach Andy Sythe had the following to say about Rodda. "There isn't a finer coach out there than Dave Rodda," Sythe said. "His level of expertise is unmatched in this profession and he will be truly missed. It's not only his working knowledge that made him the outstanding coach he is, but it's also his ability to work with and motivate student-athletes that makes him truly special." In 1996, Rodda was distinguished as a Master Coach, the highest recognition in coaching education by USA Track & Field.
