Hoyas Secure Eight Event Titles on Final Day of BIG EAST Indoor T&F Championships

NEW YORK - The Georgetown University track & field team totaled nine event titles at the 2015 BIG EAST Indoor Championships, a two-day meet that concluded on Sunday at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the historic Armory in New York. Sunday's events featured seven individual titles and one relay title for the Blue & Gray, as well as a new school record in the indoor women's 4x800-meter relay. The men finished third of seven teams, while the women were fourth of eight teams. Georgetown's combined nine event titles between the men's and women's teams is the most since 1999 when the program tallied 11 event titles. Nine titles is the third-most in program history behind 11 (1999) and 10 (1990). In what was one of the most exciting races of the day, All-American Samantha Nadel (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) gave the crowd a show as she came off the final turn of the women's 3,000-meter run and stunned Butler's Lara Olsen by taking the inside lane and outkicking the field for her first individual conference title (9:05.97). The Hoyas put a trio of Hoyas among the top eight with All-American Katrina Coogan (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter Academy), stepping on the line after just being on the track for the 800m finals, finishing third (9:08.87) and All-American Madeline Chambers (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) finishing seventh (9:28.51). Nadel's PR was more than 12 seconds faster than her previous best (9:18.23). All-American Sabrina Southerland (New York, N.Y./Benjamin N. Cardozo) makes every race at the Armory look easy. The sophomore, competing on her home track from her high school days, went out for the women's 1,000-meter run and handily took care of business, winning with a time of 2:46.18 as a trio of Hoyas finished among the top four with Kennedy Weisner (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic) finishing third (2:49.44) and Heather Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Malius) taking fourth (2:52.03). This is Southerland's second individual indoor conference title. She previously won the women's 800-meter run at the 2014 championships. In the men's mile, All-American Ryan Manahan (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) ran an incredibly smart race. The pack picked up the pace with four laps to go and a trio of Hoyas were running 4/5/6 with two laps left of racing. On the back stretch of the final lap, Manahan dropped the hammer, easily surpassing the field to clock 4:10.79 for the win. This is Manahan's first individual conference title. In addition to Manahan, three other Hoyas scored points in the event with Michael Lederhouse (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) finishing fifth (4:12.11), followed by Matt Howard (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) in seventh (4:19.96) and Charles Cooper (Montreal, Canada/Lower Canada College) taking eighth (4:20.03). The men's 1,000-meter final went out fast with All-American Billy Ledder (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga) and Cole Williams (San Francisco, Calif./Occidental College) taking over the lead with 500 meters to go. The duo continued to pull away from the pack, battling each other for first with Williams edging out Ledder, timing in at 2:21.71 for the win while Ledder clocked 2:22.10. Zack Zingsheim (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic) ran a PR to finish fourth in the race, with a time of 2:25.86. Competing in his first BIG EAST Indoor Championships, freshman Joe White (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic) was in the faster of a two-heat 400-meter final. White battled with DePaul's Sebastian Feyersinger and came off the final turn with a strong kick to win his heat and the event with a time of 48.11. Teammate Nick Sullivan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) finished third in the heat and fourth overall with a time of 49.70. The sophomore stepped on the track and quickly established his lead in men's 500-meter dash, besting the rest of his heat by nearly two seconds, clocking 1:03.51 for the individual title. Daniel Anderson (Ozark, Mo./Ozark) finished third overall with a time of 1:05.38. Gordon, Manahan, Ledder and White competed in the last race on the track, winning the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:16.11. Ledder and White both held on to and extended the lead established by their teammates for the win. Becca DeLoache (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), long plagued with nagging injuries during her time on the Hilltop, walks away from her final indoor conference championship as a BIG EAST individual champion. Without hesitation, DeLoache executed a strong and confident race, clocking 1:13.86 in the women's 500-meter dash for her first conference title. The men's 800-meter run went out quickly, with Villanova's Elliot Slade setting a new meet record with a time of 1:48.91. A pair of Hoyas made the podium with Slade in the record-setting race as All-Americans Amos Bartelsmeyer (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis Country Day) and Ahmed Bile (Annandale, Va./Annandale) finished second (1:49.63) and third (1:52.44), respectively. The women's 4x800-meter relay saw another meet record fall today as the Hoyas finished second in the race, clocking 8:36.32. The time is also a new school record for the Blue & Gray, besting the mark set in 1992 (8:40.40), when the event was still competed at the NCAA Championships. In a classic BIG EAST matchup between the Villanova University Wildcats and the Georgetown University Hoyas, All-American Hannah Neczypor (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) led off, handing the baton to Weisner, unable to handle the speed and acceleration of VU's second leg. DeLoache made a strong push but a second kick from the Wildcats over the final 100 meters was too much as the Hoyas took second place. Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and John Murray (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) finished fourth (8:22.31) and seventh (8:23.83), respectively, in the men's 3,000-meter final. On Saturday, Kenneth Armstrong (San Dimas, Calif./Damien) recorded a mark of 6.67m in the men's long jump to take fifth place. Also scoring points in the long jump for the Hoyas was Richard D'Ambrosio (Collegeville, Pa./Malvern Prep) jumping 6.53m, good enough for seventh place. The foursome of Jasmine Robinson (Tampa, Fla./Wharton), Jocelyn Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield/Northeastern), Martin and Walsh combined for a time of 3:50.73 to finish third in the women's 4x400-meter relay.
