BERKELEY, Calif. – The California Golden Bears began their outdoor season on Saturday at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley in the California Outdoor Opener, coming away with 16 individual event titles. Several Bears placed their names in the Cal record books on Saturday. Senior Cheri Chan claimed the fifth spot on Cal’s All-Time Performers List in the women’s javelin with a mark of 142-7, on her way to the event title on Saturday. Junior Scott Chiesa also moved into fifth all-time on the men’s side of the javelin, winning the title with a mark of 225-5. Freshman Bethan Knights also etched her name into the record books, clocking a winning time of 4:21.18 in the 1500-meters, which places her seventh on Cal’s All-Time Performers List. Sophomore Walt Jones IV leapt a distance of 25-4.50 (7.73m) to claim the long jump title and move into eighth on the All-Time Performers List and redshirt sophomore Ethan Cochran also moved onto the All-Time Performers List at number 10 with his discus throw of 190-3 (57.99m) in his victory. Saturday’s opener was a scoring meet between Cal, UC Davis, Long Beach State and the University of San Francisco. The Cal men won the quad-meet with a total of 218.5 points, while the women were second with a total of 172 points.
“I think it was a great beginning for an outdoor season,” director of track and field Tony Sandoval said on Saturday from Edwards Stadium. “There’s nothing like a nice, sunny day and wonderful meet to bring the best out of people and they responded. There were some phenomenal early season marks. The two marks in the men’s and women’s 1500, Ethan in the discus, Walt in the long jump and we had a lot of the younger people get on track early.”
The javelin saw winners on both sides for the Bears, as Chan, who missed the entire 2014 season due to injury, impressed with her fifth attempt reaching a distance of 142-7. That mark surpassed former Bear Missy Vanek (2002) for fifth on the All-Time Performers List. Chiesa, a College of San Mateo transfer, announced his arrival in Berkeley with his first competitive throw for Cal, etching his name into fifth on the men’s side of the record books with his throw of 225-5.
“This was a very special meet for Cheri,” Sandoval added. “This was the meet where she was injured last year in the warmup and I know that she has been planning this. To come back from an ACL injury on her plant foot in a short amount of time is incredible. Coach (Mohamad Saatara) and Cheri have worked very hard and to see her PR and perform the way that she did is almost like a miracle.”
In the discus, Cochran set a new lifetime best in his win, moving himself into 10th on the All-Time Performers List with a mark of 190-3 (57.99m). Senior thrower Scott Esparza claimed the hammer title with a mark of 200-8 (61.16m), while freshman Peter Simon made his outdoor debut with a mark of 187-1 (57.03m) to finish third. Simon also won a share of the shot put title with a mark of 56-0.00 (17.07m).
The 1500-meters on both the men’s and women’s sides saw multiple PR’s. Aside from Knights’ incredible outdoor debut, junior Mariel Mendoza (4:27.09) and redshirt senior Heather Cerney (4:29.37) both PR’ed. For the men, junior Thomas Joyce won the race and fellow juniors Leland Later (3:44.99) and Josh Lewis (3:46.50) PR’ed in second and third place. Later also PR’ed in the 800-meters (1:50.13), as did freshman Ellis Newton (1:50.60).
Jones IV, an Oregon State transfer, leapt a distance of 25-4.50 on his final attempt to claim the event title and move into eighth on the All-Time Performers List in his outdoor debut. Junior Jonte Grant placed third with a leap of 24-2.25.
The next outdoor meet is slated for Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, when the Bears host the 19th annual Cal Multi’s at Edwards Stadium.
