STANFORD’S KOROLEV MAKES WORLD TEAM

Derrick wins third straight U.S. title

BOULDER, Colo. –  Stanford’s Maksim Korolev placed sixth at the U.S. Cross Country Championships Saturday and earned the American team’s final qualifying spot for the upcoming World Championships.

Korolev, a graduate student in management science and engineering, covered the 12-kilometer course (7.46 miles) in the men’s open race at the Flatirons Golf Course in 37:03, earning the final U.S. spot by 10 seconds.

Korolev, men’s winner Chris Derrick ’12, and women’s fifth-place finisher Sara Bei Hall ’05 each made the U.S. team and gives Stanford three qualifiers for the IAAF World Championships on March 28 in Guiyang, China.

Derrick, a 14-time All-America at Stanford, captured his third consecutive U.S. title, becoming the first to do so since the late Pat Porter’s streak from 1982-89. Derrick ran 36:18, earning a resounding 30-second victory over runner-up Robert Curtis. Derrick earned his second world berth, having placed 10^th in Bydgoszcz, Poland, in 2013.

Hall ran the women’s 8K (4.97-mile) course in 28:26. This is her second world championship berth, and first since 2006.

Korolev, who placed fourth at the NCAA Championships in November, becomes the first active Stanford runner to advance to worlds since Ian Dobson in 2005. Tony Sandoval and Roy Kissin also accomplished the feat, in 1976.

Stanford freshman Patrick Perrier was 28^th in the junior men’s race (8K) in 28:05.
