SEATTLE - The Dempsey Indoor reopens for business once again this Saturday with the UW Indoor Preview marking the start of the 2015 Washington track and field season. Expect the Dempsey to be one of the top venues in the nation once again for the best in collegiate track, mixed in with many of America's elite professional track stars.
The Preview gets underway Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and should run nonstop through to approximately 5:30 p.m. This year's opener will already see a number of top D-I teams converging on the Dempsey, including Pac-12 rivals Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, USC, and Washington State. Contingents from Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, Seattle Pacific, and Seattle U. will also be on hand, plus many more.
A number of elite professional training groups are also expected to create a buzz on Saturday. The Nike Oregon Project will be in town, including American Olympians Matthew Centrowitz, Treniere Moser, and Shannon Rowbury among others. American steeplechase record-holder Evan Jager is also among the entrants in the 800m and 1000m.
From a Husky perspective, Saturday will be jam-packed. On the women's side, a large group of Dawgs will get their first 60-meters on the record on Saturday, led by seniors Haley Jacobson and Gianna Woodruff. Many of UW's top sprinters will also make their debuts on the 4x400-meter relays to close out the day.
Typically held at only this first meet, the 600-meter races let many of the Husky mid-distance crew test their fitness. All-American Baylee Mires is set to race in the third heat on the women's side, and in the top heat, freshman Rose Christen is entered in a race that is slated to feature teenage phenom Mary Cain, the youngest American ever to comepete at the World Championships.
Recent cross country All-American Maddie Meyers rolls right into the indoor season by running in the top 3,000-meter section, in the same heat with senior Eleanor Fulton.
2014 Pac-12 pole vault champ Diamara Planell Cruz and MPSF champ Kristina Owsinski will get their seasons started along with Elizabeth Quick, third at Pac-12s a year ago. The women's long jump will feature newcomer Kennadi Bouyer and Alanna Coker will make her debut in the triple jump along with senior Jaleecia Roland.
In the women's shot put, redshirt freshman Gina Flint gets to make her long-awaited first throws, along with true freshman Lyndsay Leatherman and juniors Alyx Toeaina and Bev Coleman. Toeaina and Coleman will also throw the weight, as will Carolyn Gravelle and freshman Onyie Chibuogwu.
Among the men's sprint entries are Maurice McNeal, Travis Marshall, Quadelle Satterwhite and several more in the 60-meter dash, and Chris WIlliams in the 60-meter hurdles.
In the men's 600-meters, Pac-12 800m champ Derrick Daigre opens up, as will sprinters Andrew Prentice, Michael Thomas, and Kaid Tipton. At another uncommon distance, sophomore Blake Nelson runs the 1,000-meters, as will Keith Williams and Kyle Blume.
Cross country All-American Tyler King drops down to run the mile on Saturday, while Nick Harris, an honorable mention All-American at 1,500-meters, steps up to the 3k, with Johnathan Stevens also entered in the top 3k heat.
Men's field events feature five Huskies in the high jump: Joe Knight, Chase Walker, and multi specialists Cole Jensen, Carson Murray, and Nick Pfeiffer.
The men's pole vault features All-American and defending Pac-12 champion Jax Thoirs, along with 2012 Pac-12 champion J.J. Juilfs and 2013 runner-up Chris Williams, all looking to clear some big early bars. Redshirt freshman Lev Marcus also makes his official debut after making it over 16-feet several times unattached last year.
Five Huskies will be in the top flight of the men's shot put, with D-II All-American Frank Catelli making his Husky debut, along with Pac-12 scorer Brian Hutchison and Jack Scheideman, Jack Lembcke, and Dan Boyden. Scheideman and redshirt frosh Carey Campbell will throw the weight as well.
