Phil Knight's dollars, Nike's marketing boost Oregon's appeal and stature

Should Oregon win the College Football Playoff title Monday against Ohio State, critics will say it’s a championship that Nike bought. And if Oregon loses, the same folks will say the Ducks should have won with all the advantages they have.
In 2004, Knight was part of a group that questioned track coach Martin Smith and then-AD Bill Moos. Knight sent a message by ending his financial backing. Smith soon resigned.
