Baker wins, sets record in first collegiate race

SEATTLE –
Stanford’s Sean McGorty made his first collegiate track race count by running a sub-4 mile at the UW Indoor Preview on Saturday.

McGorty, a redshirt freshman, ran 3:59.34 on the 307-meter Dempsey Indoor oval to place third behind two Nike Oregon Project Olympians, American Matthew Centrowitz (3:58.60) and Canadian Cam Levins (3:58.75).

McGorty, an All-America in cross country, became the 14th runner in Stanford history to break four minutes. The list includes Olympians Jeff Atkinson, Gabe Jennings, Duncan MacDonald, and Michael Stember.

The season-opening meet provided the opportunities for Stanford’s highly-decorated freshmen to make their debuts. They did not disappoint.

Olivia Baker, the 400 bronze medalist at July’s IAAF World Junior Championships, set a school record in the 600 of 1:29.42. Baker went wire to wire to hold off professional middle-distance star Mary Cain, who tried to move to the front with a lap to go but ultimately finished fourth. Baker broke the year-old Stanford mark of 1:30.82 set by Claudia Saunders.

“She didn’t back down,” said Jody Stewart, Stanford’s associate head coach for sprints and hurdles. “As a freshman, that says a lot. You rarely see that, especially at that level of competition.”

Elise Cranny, the Pac-12 Cross Country Freshman of the Year last fall, made her collegiate track debut in impressive fashion. Racing a trio of Oregon Nike Project runners, Cranny hung close with Shannon Rowbury, Jordan Hasay, and Treniere Moser to finish fourth in the 1,000. Cranny’s time of 2:42.39 was the second-fastest in Stanford history and a school freshman record.

Another big story from the pole vaulter Garrett Starkey. After missing last season with injury, the junior set a personal record of 17-2 ¾ to place third. It is the No. 5 indoor jump ever at Stanford.

Other Stanford victories came from 2014 Pac-12 champion Darian Brooks in the triple jump (50-2), and in the men’s 4x800 relay, won by the team of Marco Bertolotti, Tom Coyle, Tai Dinger, and Will Drinkwater in 7:40.17.

Another freshman, 2014 U.S. junior national decathlon champ Harrison Williams, ran his 60 hurdles semifinal in 8.33 for the No. 7 time in school history.
