New Dawgs Show Off Tricks In Dempsey Opener
SEATTLE – The Husky track and field team already went to work at reshaping the school’s top-10 lists today, as the season shot out of the blocks at the UW Indoor Preview. The fact that the two fastest 60-meter dashes ever run in the Dempsey came in the season opener bodes well for the home campaign to come.
A new season always means some new faces, and the Husky rookies did all they could to steal the show this afternoon. Redshirt freshmen Gina Flint and Lev Marcus, and sophomore transfer Kennadi Bouyer all posted marks among the five-best ever at UW in their first competitions. They were part of seven new top-10 marks for the Huskies, who enjoyed their most productive indoor opener in several years.
Three Dempsey facility records went down today, with Oregon’s Jasmine Todd breaking her own record with a time of 7.15 seconds that is the fastest in the world so far this year. Pro sprinter Joe Morris also took the men’s 60-meters in a scant 6.55 seconds, third-fastest in the world this year. Then U.S. Olympian Shannon Rowbury showed some peak early season form in the mile run, as the Nike Oregon Project athlete set a new record in a time of 4:27.86, after already having run and won the 1,000-meters earlier in the day.
Flint, the former multiple state champ from Bellingham, delivered in her long-awaited official debut, as she broke the freshman shot put record and moved to No. 2 in school history with a mark of 51-5 ½. That throw came on her sixth and final attempt, after she had thrown 49-9 on two earlier attempts. Only former NCAA Champion Jennifer Ponath has put up a better mark indoors, going 52-7 ½ back in 1988.
Over at the pole vault runway, Marcus, a Seattle native and Nathan Hale High School grad, would nearly upstage defending Pac-12 Champion Jax Thoirs. Marcus had twice cleared 16-7 ¼ last season during his redshirt year, showing plenty of promise, but today in his first official meet he burst onto the scene with a huge PR of 17-10 ½, more than a foot higher than his previous best. Thoirs had to come up with a clutch third-attempt clearance at that bar to stay alive, but the All-American then flew over 18-0 ½ on his first attempt to get the win to start off his junior season, matching his indoor PR in the process. Thoirs quickly climbs to fourth in the NCAA this season with Marcus close behind at No. 7. Thoirs was eighth at the NCAA Indoor meet a year ago and an 18-foot clearance has always made the cut in the past.
The first big highlight of the day came from Bouyer, a native of University Place, Wash. and a Curtis grad who spent her freshman season at Ole Miss before returning close to home. Bouyer, expected to contribute primarily in the long jump, showed some pure speed on the track as well, as she ran two 60-meter dash times of 7.51 in the first round and 7.45 in the second. That time puts her right into fourth on the Husky top-10 list. Bouyer would then race over to the long jump runway, and she took third overall there as well with a best of 19-feet, 3.50-inches, which ranks 10th on that top-10 list and was the best by a Dawg since 2005.
Another new face, Alanna Coker, joined Bouyer with a new top-10 mark in the jumps. Coker, a sophomore transfer from Sacramento State, originally from Kirkland, was fourth overall in the triple jump, getting out to 39-5 ¾ on her first attempt. That puts her into a tie for ninth.
The final new top-10 mark came from Washington’s top women’s distance standout from the fall, Maddie Meyers, as the newly minted All-American ran the fastest 3,000-meters in the NCAA so far this year, taking second overall behind a post-collegiate runner in a time of 9:16.03. Meyers looked relaxed and strong throughout, cruising to the No. 6 time in school history.
“It’s always fun to watch our team compete for the first time,” said Head Coach Greg Metcalf. “You don’t really have preseason in indoor track. It’s just nice to watch kids go wear the uniform and compete and work hard. Day one, I like the way the team feels. I think they have great attitude and energy. There were some great performances. The vaulters, J.J. and Chris will get in that mix too, and to watch the freshman Lev Marcus go do that, and then Jax does what champions do and get a big clearance on a third attempt.
“Gina Flint is a very exciting addition and just threw farther than any Husky since the 1980s. Kennadi Bouyer showed tremendous potential in her first meet as a Husky, and Alanna Coker I think will be fantastic for us in the triple jump. Then we also were able to welcome back some big time talents like Baylee Mires and Maurice McNeal. And to cap it off we won a couple relays at the end, and that’s a great way to build momentum.”
There were many more highlights during the opening indoor meet, which got underway at 9 a.m. and lasted until nearly 7 p.m. when the Huskies picked up consecutive wins in the top heats of the 4x400-meter relays, the women winning in a time of 3:46.33, and the men following suit in 3:14.74.
In the sprints, senior Haley Jacobson got off to a strong start in the 60-meters with a best of 7.73 seconds, and junior Travis Marshall opened well on the men’s side in 6.84. Lucas Strong, a redshirt freshman indoors, had a PR of 6.91 seconds and junior Quadelle Satterwhite matched that time. In the 60m hurdles, junior Kimberly Stueckle had a PR of 8.68 seconds, falling barely outside the top-10 list. Junior Chris Williams also had a great start in the hurdles as the only person all day to break eight seconds, going 7.98, faster than he ran all of 2014.
All-American Baylee Mires got her season off to a great start with a win in her 600-meters heat in a time of 1:31.53. Freshman Rose Christen also ran 1:34.82 in her official Husky debut. On the men’s side, Michael Thomas and Andrew Prentice had two of the day’s top times with matching 1:19.59’s in the 600.
Nick Harris won his 3,000-meters heat in a nearly 30-second PR of 8:17.71, while in the next heat, despite finishing sixth, Fred Huxham ran great unattached, crossing in 8:08.38, a time just a couple seconds away from UW’s top-10 list. Johnathan Stevens also went 8:17.90 to finish 10th in the section. In the women’s 3k, aside from Meyers, Eleanor Fulton also stepped up in distance and delivered a solid time of 9:40.74 to take eighth in the top heat. Jenna Sanders also ran a 15-second PR in the 3k, finishing in 9:55.14.
Defending Pac-12 women’s pole vault champ Diamara Planell Cruz opened with a victory today, clearing 13-3 ½ on her first try before passing up to 13-9 ¼, missing three tries there. Elizabeth Quick and Kristina Owsinski both made 12-9 ½ on first attempts for solid openers as well. On the men’s side, senior J.J. Juilfs had a good opener with a clearance of 16-8 ¾, and Chris Williams cleared 16-2 ¾.
Behind the picket fences, shots and weights were tossed around for the first time, with the Huskies producing some solid opening marks highlighted by Flint. D-II All-American transfer Frank Catelli was fourth overall in the men’s shot put with a best of 55-2 ¾, while true freshman Jack Lembcke was right behind in fifth at 53-3 ½. Jack Scheideman had four throws over 17-meters in the men’s weight throw, getting out to a PR of 57-5 ¾ on his fifth attempt, and finishing third. Bev Coleman was right at her PR in the women’s shot at 44-5 ½.
Washington will have two weeks as it looks to build on this opener at the annual UW Invitational on January 30-31.
