Running USA's Allan Steinfeld Development Award Application Window Opens

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (October 6, 2013)- Running USA,
the national industry non-profit organization, has opened the application window for its annual
Allan Steinfeld Development Award, a $25,000 training group grant. The winning team will be announced and feted at
Running USA 2014: The 11th Industry Conference during the
Hall of Champions Dinner

on Monday, February 10 at the Marriott Marquis & Marina in San Diego, California.

"One of the highlights of our annual conference is presenting the Allan Steinfeld Development Award to a worthy U.S. training group," said Kevin Callahan, Running USA President. "Although it is always a tough decision with many deserving teams, this grant fulfills our mission and Allan's vision to support and promote U.S. distance runners and to help nurture future Olympians."

At Running USA 2010, the inaugural development award was announced and named after Allan Steinfeld, a long-time
leader in the sport, who jump-started the U.S. distance running resurgence when as head of the New York Road Runners he allocated $20,000 seed money ($1 per U.S. entry at the 2000 New York City Marathon) for the development program Team USA Distance Running launched in November 2000 that produced top training groups such as Team Running USA (two Olympic medals in 2004 and major marathon wins) and inspired the formation of others.

In February 2010, Team USA Minnesota was selected as the inaugural award winner; in February 2011, Team USA Arizona, the second recipient of the award; in January 2012, Mammoth Track Club, the third recipient, and in February 2013, ZAP Fitness (left, MarathonFoto), the fourth team.

Arciniaga Wins Close Men's Race for First Marathon Win and USA Title

ST. PAUL, Minn. - (O ctober 6, 2013) - Nick Arciniaga of Flagstaff,

Ariz. notched a career first

marathon win, edging
Josphat Boit by three seconds to capture the USA Marathon Championships Sunday. In the women's race,
Annie Bersagel ran the downtown Minneapolis to St. Paul course in 2:30:53 for a comfortable win.

The victorious pair earned USA Marathon Championship titles with the wins and pocketed $25,000 each for their efforts.

Arciniaga, who finished eighth at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, outkicked Boit in the final strides of the race, after a see-saw battle among the lead pack. Shadrack Biwott was third in 2:13:26.

"I wanted to be the first one to 24, the first one to 25, so I kept making intermediate goals for myself throughout the race," Arciniaga said. "I tried to motivate myself to catch the group ahead and stay in it and fight. Right now, I'm elated. My legs hurt but I feel great. Better than any other marathon so far."

Bersagel, a former NCAA Woman of the Year and Fulbright Scholar who trained with Team USA Minnesota early in her professional career, moved into the race lead after the 20 mile mark and built her margin as the final miles unspooled.

Vail, Wodak Win 8th Annual Rock 'n' Roll San Jose Half

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2013)- Four weeks out from the ING
New York City Marathon, Ryan Vail was looking for a good sign. He got exactly what he was looking for on Sunday morning at the Rock 'n' Roll San Jose Half Marathon.

Behind the strength of a strong surge into the lead just past the 10-mile mark, Vail, a 27-year-old from Portland, Ore., ran unchallenged for most of the final 5K stretch to the finish line, breaking the tape in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 26 seconds.

"I'm coming off a 150-mile week, and I'm not fresh so it's a really good sign," Vail said of his performance. "Running 4:40 to 4:50 [per mile] felt easy and that's a really good sign heading into New York where I'm hoping to run upper 4:50s."

In the women's race, Canadian Natasha Wodak made her final race before the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in two weeks a good one, winning in 1:14:39, nearly two minutes up on second-place finisher Megan Deakins, 23, of Mountain View, Calif.

Rock 'n' Roll Cleveland Debuts Successful Half Marathon

CLEVELAND, OH (October 6, 2013)- Runners gathered downtown to enjoy live bands and cheerleaders along the inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Cleveland Half Marathon course on Sunday. More than 7,000 participants from 47 states and 7 countries celebrated the day with a performance by Gavin DeGraw at the Finish Line Festival.

Ohio residents stole the show at the front of the pack.
Aaron Apathy from Westlake started out of the gates fast, running tight with David Carter until Apathy used the first hill at mile 4 to make a move. With no other contenders in sight at mile 10, Apathy took first place in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 44 seconds. Carter, from nearby Lakewood, placed second a few minutes behind in 1:17:05.

Kelly Green from Burton placed first in the women's half-marathon with a time of 1:23:19.

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon Forced to ReSchedule to November 10 by Government Shutdown

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - (October 2, 2013)
- Fallout from the U.S. Government shutdown has forced postponement of the fourth
Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon originally scheduled for Sunday, October 6, 2013 from Mount Vernon, Va. to National Harbor, Md. The first eight miles of the course is on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, a national park. The decision was made by race officials on Wednesday evening as a resolution to the budget battle on Capitol Hill did not appear imminent.

The USATF-sanctioned race now has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 10, 2013, 7 a.m., the day before the Veterans Day holiday. The race serves as the Road Runners Club of America National Half Marathon Championship.

"Our decision to postpone mid-week was very difficult, very complex, very strategic, very frustrating and very sad," explained Steve Nearman, Event Director and Founder. "We wanted to hold off for as long as possible hoping for a budget resolution but at the same time we owed it to our out-of-town runners as well as the rest of our field to make a decision so that they could cancel and/or modify their schedules accordingly. We also wanted to give plenty of notice to our law enforcement personnel from six jurisdictions and to our multitude of vendors like the bus, tent rentals and the porta-john companies. We appreciate their

patience and support.

"Our race management officials have been working together for nearly a year to produce another stellar, logistically-challenging 13.1-mile point-to-point footrace with more than 3,000 entrants. The total focus has been on the weekend of October 6. It truly breaks our hearts that we are forced to postpone but we feel fortunate that we found a weekend that works for all six of our jurisdictions and that all our government officials are tremendously supportive of our race and our participants."
