Edinboro & Alabama-Hunstville Women, Stonehill Men Are New Top Teams in DII Regional Rankings
October 8, 2013

NEW ORLEANS Aiming for a national top-10 rank for the first time this season, the Edinboro women headline a trio of teams that took control of their respective regions in Tuesday’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Regional Rankings.

Edinboro’s women — ranked No. 14 nationally — took control of the Atlantic Region and the Alabama-Hunstville women moved atop the South Region, while Stonehill (No. 25) gained control of the East Region as the lone new men’s top-ranked regional squad.

Edinboro claimed the top spot from Indiana (Pa.) (No. 11 nationally) in the Atlantic after finishing as the top Division II unit at the Greater Louisville Classic. Led by senior Sarah Krolick in 16th overall and four runners in the top 100 of the mostly Division I race, the Fighting Scots defeated No. 8 Southern Indiana, No. 12 UW-Parkside, and No. 19 Tampa. The effect this will have on the Fighting Scots’ position in the National Coaches Poll will be revealed when it is released Wednesday.

Indiana (Pa.) dropped to the region’s second spot following a 32nd-place finish in the Gold division at the Paul Short Invitational.

Also making gains in the Atlantic is preseason favorite Shippensburg, which moved up one spot to No. 3 after winning the Brown division race at Paul Short. The Raiders have won each of the past five Atlantic Region team crowns.

Alabama-Hunstville was the other women’s team to move to No. 1 in its region — the South — as the Chargers were the top non-DI squad at Jacksonville State Foothills Invitational, led by individual overall winner junior Vicky Winslow.

The Chargers displaced Tampa (No. 19 nationally) after the Spartans finished fifth among DII teams at Louisville. Each of the past six South Regional team crowns have gone to the Spartans.

On the men’s side, idle Stonehill (No. 25 nationally) took control of the East Region as former top team and defending regional champ American International (No. 13) fell two spots in the region to No. 3 after a 36th-place team finish in the Gold division at Paul Short. Franklin Pierce also moved up one spot to No. 2.

NCAA Division II Regional Championships will be held November 9 & 10, and more information about host sites and dates for specific meets can be found at Regional Championships Central.
