Middlebury Men Take Control of Parity-Filled New England in Division III Regional Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – All is quiet on the Western front in Tuesday’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Regional Rankings, but the East Coast is another matter completely.

The men’s New England Region, which has already had two different top-five nationally ranked squads grace its top spot, could be going for a third this week as the Middlebury men have claimed the No. 1 spot after a strong showing at the NEICAAA New England Championships.

Outside of the New England and the Atlantic regions on the men’s side, the rankings were very quiet: no major changes took place in the women’s polls, with seven of the eight regions identical to last week, and half of the men’s regions also remained stationary.

Middlebury (No. 24 nationally) finished fifth overall among Division I, II and III programs at the New England Championships to top a field including three other top-30 nationally ranked DIII programs from within the region running their top squads.

The Panthers took down seventh-place Bates (No. 14 nationally), eighth-place Tufts (No 30) and ninth-place MIT (No. 5), along with a Bowdoin (No. 22) team not running its full top squad.

As a result, the Panthers jumped four spots into the region’s top spot ahead of Williams, which remained stationary at No. 2 in the region. The battle for the top spot between the two is a close one. Middlebury received more overall votes, but Williams took one more first-place vote, 8-7.

Bates stood pat at third in the region. Tufts jumped up two spots to No. 4.

In a testament to the depth and parity of the region, the two other teams that have been ranked No. 1 in the region — MIT and Bowdoin — are now ranked No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. The engineers dropped from the top spot to No. 5, while Bowdoin fell two positions to No. 6 from No. 4 last week.

The women’s New England Region was heavily in action this weekend at NEICAAAs as well, but the teams al finished in accordance with their regional ranks.

The other significant regional rankings action came in the Atlantic Region, as SUNY Cortland (No. 17 nationally) moved from No. 3 to No. 2 in a swap with SUNY Geneseo (No. 15). A team victory for the Red Dragons at St. Lawrence boosted the squad up to the second spot, though both teams still retain first-place votes in the region.

NYU (No. 8 nationally) remains atop the Atlantic with eight first-place votes, while Cortland garnered three and Geneseo collected one. Cortland and Geneseo are only separated by one overall vote in the region, 105-104.
