Moat, Lyons Win USA Trail Marathon Titles in Moab

Bryant, Anderson pick up master's titles at second Moab Trail Marathon

MOAB, Utah - The Moab Trail Marathon, held Saturday, Nov. 3, served as the 2012 USA Trail Marathon National Championships. The race featured a highly competitive field on both the men's and women's sides, but it was Cody Moat, 34 of Fillmore, Utah and Kerri Lyons of Salt Lake City who emerged victorious from the slickrock, sand and rocky trails on a beautiful fall morning in this renowned high desert playground. The second year race, directed by Danelle Ballengee, launched from the Prichard Canyon trailhead.

Moat (right, Hunter Imagery), a former track athlete at Southern Utah University, has acquired a reputation as an exceptionally tough competitor after collecting the 2012 Spartan Race World Championship title. Compared to the extreme obstacles (flames, barbed wire, mud pits, electric fences and more) of a Spartan Race, a day on the sandy Utah trails looks like a walk in the park. Moat says he sees the trail as a place to just let go, and he rolled to the Trail Marathon title in three hours, eight minutes, 26 seconds.

Justin Ricks of Pueblo West, Colo. and Jason Bryant of Elkin, N.C. took the pace out conservatively, leading to a second place finish for Ricks, 32, in 3:14:39 and a third place finish, as well as a master's win, for Bryant, 40, in 3:17:06.

On the women's side, Kerri Lyons, 24, changed from the half to full marathon just the day before the race. Lyons (left, Hunter Imagery) had great success on the roads this year, including a 35 minute-10K, 59 minute-10 miler, and second place finish at the XTERRA National Trail Championships in September. In just her third trail race ever, she ran to the women's trail marathon title in 3:27:46.

Megan Kimmel, 32, took second in 3:32:06 for her third podium finish this year. Kimmel was runner up at the USA Half Marathon Trail Championships in June and claimed the national title at the 10K distance in August (Continental Divide Trail Race). US Mountain Team members Michele Suszek and Melody Fairchild took third and fourth, and Kristi Anderson, 42, won the women's master's title.

Rothman Institute 8K Elite Field Announced
Registration still open for Rothman Institute 8K through Sunday, November 11

PHILADELPHIA - The 2012 Rothman Institute 8K announces an impressive field of elite runners this year led by Philadelphia-area standouts Samuel Ndereba (right, PhotoRun), Sheila Reid, Frances Koons, Samantha McNally, Cecily Tynan, Chris Heisey, John Itati and Matt Sadercock.

The Rothman Institute 8K (4.97 miles) -- held on Saturday, November 17 on Philadelphia Marathon Race Weekend -- is a great way to take part in Race Weekend. Runners will start on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, near the Philadelphia Museum of Art -- looking out upon City Hall -- before taking a turn on the scenic banks of the Schuylkill River and Kelly Drive.

To register for the Rothman Institute 8K, visit www.philadelphiamarathon.com. Registration costs $45 and closes on Sunday, November 11, 2012.

Female Runners to Watch
The fastest entrant in the field is Sheila Reid, a 2012 Olympian (5,000 Meters, Canada) and an NCAA All-American from Villanova. Frances Koons, the 2009 Rothman Institute 8K champion and an NCAA All-American from Villanova, is trying to reclaim the title.

A few women will be doubling, running both the 8K and the Philadelphia Half Marathon on Sunday including Hirsute Madero (Flagstaff, AZ) -- the 2010 8K runner-up and the 2010 Philadelphia Half Marathon winner -- and Kenya's Helen Jemutai, who won the Tufts 10K in Chicago in October.

Other notables are: Samantha McNally (Doylestown, PA), who qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials while running in the 2011 Philadelphia Marathon; Amy Van Alstine (Midland Park, NJ) who boasts a 15:43 5K PR; American University standout Erin Koch (Chevy Chase, MD); and Marissa Ryan who enters with a 33:36 10K PR.

The 2011 Masters Champion and local favorite, Cecily Tynan (Media, PA), will be back to defend her title in the Masters Division.

Male Runners to Watch
Kenya's Samuel Ndereba (Philadelphia, PA), the 2011 Rothman 8K winner, is back to defend his title. Ndereba also will be competing in the Philadelphia Half Marathon, and should be a contender in that race as well; he is just coming off of a victory at the Des Moines Half Marathon on Sunday, October 21.

Looking to stand in the way of a repeat victory for Ndereba are some speedy international runners including 2011's second-place finisher Ethiopian John Itati (Royersford, PA); Kenya's Emmanuel Bor, a University of Alabama graduate with a 23:18 8K PR (Bor will also be running the Half Marathon on Sunday), and Harbert Okuti (New Paltz, NY) is Uganda's 5K record-holder.

Scott Smith (Flagstaff, AZ), with a 28:33 10K PR, is the top American prospect in the men's field. Other Americans to keep an eye on include Chris Pannone (Gardiner, NY) with a 2:18 Boston Marathon time this year; University of Pennsylvania alumni Phillip Kawkwell; Jonny Wilson (Flagstaff, AZ) and Temple Podiatry student Chris Heisey (Philadelphia, PA).

Going for a three-peat in the Masters Division is two-time winner Matt Sandercock (Exton, PA), the 2010 and 2011 masters Rothman 8K winner.
Registration for the Rothman Institute 8K is available at www.philadelphiamarathon.com, costs $45 and closes on November 11, 2012.

Philadelphia Marathon Opens 3,000 Spots for NYC Marathoners

Registration fee for the registered NYC Marathon runners is $200. Half of the fee will be donated to the Hurricane Relief Fund for the American Red Cross

PHILADELPHIA (November 6, 2012) - Mayor Michael A. Nutter announced that the sold-out Philadelphia Marathon will be opened for an additional 3,000 race participants who were registered, but unable to compete, in the cancelled 2012 New York City Marathon.

New York City race competitors can enter a lottery to register for the 19th edition of the Philadelphia Marathon, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. EST and ending Thursday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. EST. Mayor Nutter stresses that the offer is available only to marathoners previously registered for the Sunday, November 4 New York City Marathon.

"In the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the many challenges created by it, we are honored to welcome New York City marathon participants to Philadelphia," said Mayor Michael Nutter. "We understand that marathoners have invested a great deal of time, training and dedication to prepare, and so we've decided that adding up to 3,000 competitors is something we can do to support the running community."

Mary Wittenberg, CEO of New York Road Runners, which produces the New York City Marathon, said: "We are grateful to the Philadelphia Marathon and Mayor Nutter for their generosity in inviting runners who were affected by the cancellation of the ING NYC marathon.

The registration fee for the registered NYC Marathon runners is $200. Half of the registration fee will be donated to the Hurricane Relief Fund for the American Red Cross, while the remaining funds cover additional Philadelphia Marathon supplies and resources needed to accommodate the extra marathoners.

Eligible New York marathoners interested in applying for the Philadelphia Marathon should visit www.philadelphiamarathon.com. To ensure fairness, a computerized lottery system will randomly select up to 3,000 New York City Marathon competitors to participate in the Philadelphia Marathon. Lottery selection will take place immediately after the Thursday, November 8 deadline (5 p.m. EST), and those chosen will be notified by e-mail.

"The Philadelphia Marathon sold out on October 1st with the largest field of runners in our history," said Melanie Johnson, Philadelphia Marathon Executive Director. "We are sympathetic to those who were unable to participate in the NYC Marathon. In order to add any new runners, we created a plan that increased our capabilities to include the largest number of possible registrants. It was a careful decision that took into account many factors such as the capacity of the course to accommodate the increased field of competitors, maintaining the quality of experience, and the turn-around time to secure additional supplies and resources. "

Last Friday, Nov. 2, Philadelphia Marathon organizers extended an invitation to New York City Marathon registrants to sign up through Philadelphia Marathon's charity partners. About 350 did so through the Philadelphia Marathon website, using all the remaining charity openings.

Mayor Nutter and race officials also encourage the general public to donate to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. To make a donation, contact the American Red Cross Disaster Relief or visit Generocity, a Philadelphia Marathon fundraising platform partner, at www.generocity.org/philadelphia-marathon. Click on "Start a Fundraiser" to create a personalized online fundraiser to easily invite family and friends to give. When prompted, runners can select "American Red Cross" as the benefiting nonprofit organization.

Tokyo Marathon Joins World Marathon Majors
Tokyo Marathon will be the sixth event in the Series, along with Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City

NEW YORK CITY- The World Marathon Majors® (WMM) announced the addition of the Tokyo Marathon to the World Marathon Majors Series. The seventh Tokyo Marathon, which will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2013, will be the first race in the 2013 - 2014 World Marathon Majors scoring period. The Tokyo Marathon is the first World Marathon Majors event to be based in Asia.

"Tokyo is honored to join the World Marathon Majors," said Tad Hayano, Tokyo Marathon Foundation Race Director. "As the first marathon from Asia, we will continuously make an effort to expand the brand of the WMM in Asia. Likewise, as the one of the World Marathon Majors, we believe that the Tokyo Marathon can make an even more positive contribution to the world marathon scene by working with our new partners."

Founded on January 23, 2006 by the Boston, Virgin London, BMW Berlin, Bank of America Chicago, and ING New York City marathons, the World Marathon Majors is a race series offering a $1 million prize purse to be split equally between the top male and female marathoners in the world. In addition to the six other races, the IAAF World Championships and Olympic marathons also serve as scoring events in the years in which they are held. Athletes earn points by placing among the top five in each race during a two-year scoring period. The champions of the WMM will be the man and woman who score the greatest number of points during the two-year scoring period.

The inaugural 2006 - 2007 series launched at the 110th Boston Marathon on April 17, 2006 and concluded on November 4, 2007 at the ING New York City Marathon. The 2013 - 2014 series begins with the Tokyo Marathon on February 24, 2013 and will conclude on November 2, 2014 at the ING New York City Marathon.

In a joint statement from the World Marathon Majors Race Directors, Tom Grilk, Executive Director of the Boston Athletic Association and Boston Marathon, added, "We at World Marathon Majors are delighted to have Tokyo join our group. The Japanese have a magnificent history and tradition in the marathon, and the Japanese people have long embraced the marathon and distance running in general. They are among the finest fans in the world for our sport."

The inaugural Tokyo Marathon was held on February 18, 2007 and drew 95,044 applicants and 30,870 participants. Kenya's Daniel Njenga (2:09:45) and Japan's Hitomi Niiya (2:31:01) were the race's first champions. Since 2007, the Tokyo Marathon has grown to over 300,000 applicants and nearly 36,000 participants. In addition to serving as the first race of the 2013 - 2014 WMM scoring period, the 2013 Tokyo Marathon will double as the Japanese men's national team trials for the 14th IAAF World Championships Marathon in Moscow. Prior to the establishment of the Tokyo Marathon Foundation in 2007, the city of Tokyo hosted two separate marathon events for elite men and women, dating back to 1980 and 1979, respectively.

Each of the World Marathon Majors races boasts an international elite field for both men and women, has a mass participatory field completing the same course as the elite runners, takes place in a major international market, and is regarded as among the best in the industry.
