Tegenkamp, Metivier Baillie Take USA 20K Titles

Men's national champion sets USA Championship record at 35th Stratton Faxon New Haven Road Race

By USATF

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - (September 3, 2012) - Matt Tegenkamp (Portland, Ore.) and Renee Metivier Baillie (Bend, Ore.) won the respective men's and women's titles at the USA 20K Championships on Labor Day Monday as part of the 35th Stratton Faxon New Haven Road Race in New Haven. Tegenkamp's time of 58 minutes, 30 seconds set a men's national championship record, while Metivier Baillie's time of 1:07:08 made her the 6th fastest American woman for the distance.

Men's Championship
Tegenkamp, 30, a two-time Olympian, followed Luke Puskedra (Eugene, Ore.) through a blazing early pace and helped guide him to the U.S. championships record. Puskedra, 22, who took the national runner-up spot 18-seconds back, aggressively brought a pack of 18 through the opening mile in 4:34 and then proceeded to pull away from the field coming through three miles in 13:48, with only Robert Cheseret (Colorado Springs, Colo.) within reach.

Cheseret would drift back as Puskedra charged onward, coming through the half way 10K split at 28:33, well ahead of the chase pack 20 seconds behind.

Despite the 71-degree temperature and 73 percent humidity, Puskedra passed up every water stop, but benefited from the new shadier course. It was at halfway mark, however, that Tegenkamp and Joseph Chirlee (San Antonio, Texas) began to work together on narrowing the gap. At 10 miles, it was just Tegenkamp running solo to catch upstart Puskedra. The two would run side-by-side through 12 miles before Tegenkamp switched to another gear to seal the win and earn $9000. Puskedra, however, produced an impressive debut of 58:48.

Augustus Maiyo (Colorado Springs, Colo.) rallied for third in 59:39, while Chirlee held on for 4th at 59:54, with Cheseret kicking past 2010 USA 20K champion Sean Quigley (Boulder, Colo.) for 5th in 1:00:00, giving the U.S. Army three of the top five men's spots.

Women's Championship
The women's race started out at 5:23 per mile pace with a pack of about eight women. The pack stayed tight reaching the two-mile mark in 10:47. After clicking of a 5:16 third mile on the downhill section of the course, a pack of five emerged with 2011 USA 25K champion Molly Pritz (Boulder, Colo.) leading Serena Burla (Falls Church, Va.), Stephanie Rothstein (Flagstaff, Ariz.), Alisha Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Metivier Baillie.

As the sun broke through the trees around mile four and five, the lead pack dwindled to four as Williams dropped off the back of the 5:20 pace that the leaders were pushing. Just past mile five, Metivier Baillie, 30, started to make a move but settled back into the rhythm of the foursome. Passing through 10K at 33:00, the athletes looked strong with Burla slightly off the pack. Shortly after the eight-mile mark, her patience paid off as Metivier Baillie increased her lead through the rolling hills of East Rock Park.

Metivier Baillie then cruised to the victory in 1:07:08, with Pritz securing second at 1:07:21 and Rothstein rounding out the top three in 1:07:59.

Runners Beat the Heat at Rock 'n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon
Kenya's Kurgat, Japan's Ohara take titles at 12th Labor Day Weekend half-marathon; local Olympic gold medalist Francena McCorory delights crowd as official starter; legend Frank Shorter finishes 13.1-mile event nearly 40 years to the date of historic Olympic Marathon victory; Train post-race concert on the beach

By Dan Cruz, Competitor Group

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - (September 2, 2012) - With warm temperatures and high humidity, the 12th Rock 'n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon crowned two new champions on Sunday morning. Nicholas Kurgat of Kenya was the first across the finish line on the Virginia Beach boardwalk, covering the 13.1-mile course in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 45 seconds. Running her first race in the United States, 22-year-old Rei Ohara from Japan won the women's race in 1:13:50.

The men's half-marathon was a competitive, with four runners in contention as the course looped through Camp Pendleton and back along General Booth Boulevard just past nine miles. It was then that Kurgat took charge as the leaders approached the oceanfront. He continued to stretch out his lead, eventually winning by six seconds over runner-up Takuji Morimoto of Japan (1:04:51). This marks the 11th consecutive year a Kenyan man has claimed victory at the event.

"At ten miles I looked around and I was feeling pretty good. At that point I knew I had a shot to win. When I saw the water and then I saw the 20K marker I decided to go," said Kurgat, who trains in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and completed his second race since suffering an Achilles injury earlier in the year. "It was a very difficult for me to recover from my injury and get back in the shape I was before. I'm happy to win the race and even more pleased to see my time improve."

Will Christian of nearby Norfolk was the top American, finishing seventh in 1:07:43.

This was the eighth year that Japan has sent elite runners from their national corporate championships to Virginia Beach. Ohara, who finished fourth at the Corporate Half Marathon Championships this year, overcame an illness earlier in the week to become the third straight Japanese woman to win the event.

"Up until about 10K we had a large lead group, but because of my condition I thought it was better to stay with the group and see how it went," said Ohara, who claimed her first half-marathon victory. "The lead pack started to break up around 15K and at that point Chihiro Takato and I decided to push the pace. Because I wasn't feeling well before, I didn't really think about what I was going to do in the race. To win, despite not feeling well, gives me a lot of confidence that now I can move up to the next level and compete with the best."

Chihiro Takato of Japan, only 21, finished second in 1:14:10. Perry Shoemaker, 41, of Vienna, VA, was the top American and top Masters runner, placing eighth at 1:22:21.

Olympic gold medalist and Hampton Roads native Francena McCorory joined Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms as the official race starters. McCorory, who attended Bethel High School, returned home from London on Friday night and delighted runners, wearing the gold medal she won as third leg of Team USA's 4 x 400 meter relay team.

Just eight days away from the 40th anniversary of his historic Olympic Marathon victory in Munich, a moment which ignited a cultural running boom in the United States, Frank Shorter completed his longest run in over five years, finishing the Rock 'n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon.

"It was personal for me as I wanted to run a race as close to the 40th anniversary as I could," said Shorter, a co-founder of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. "This morning I felt good and made a spur of the moment decision to jump in the field. Everything really came full circle for me out on the course. The idea that 40 years later I can still be out here participating in distance running, to compete and have the same feeling of effort and satisfaction was special. I've run this course before and I really liked it."

Capping an annual Labor Day Weekend tradition, Grammy Award winning rock band Train served as the headliner for Sunday's post-race concert on the beach.

By Oregon Sports Authority

Nearly 1,500 runners traveled from 40 different states and seven foreign countries to the heart of Oregon's Wine Country in the Willamette Valley. The race started at Stoller Vineyards, as the sun was rising over Mt. Hood to the east and the moon setting to the west, providing spectacular views for the runners.

Hesch built a strong early lead but had to "kick it into gear" after Oghoughi mounted a strong challenge at mile 11. "It was an incredible day and an incredible course," Hesch said. "It rivals any wine country scenery I've ever run through."

"It was beautiful out there, I loved the run and Destination Races does a great job," said women's winner Bak. "I'll definitely be back next year."

The Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon is the fourth of five events in the Wine Country Half Marathon series. Produced by Destination Races of Sonoma, California, the Wine Country Half Marathon series also includes events in Santa Barbara Wine Country, Napa-to-Sonoma, Healdsburg and Loudoun County, Virginia. 2012 Kauai Marathon & Half Boasts Largest Field in Race History

McCandless repeats as Marathon champion, Ely shatters women's record; both just miss Grand Hyatt Kauai $15,000 Speed Challenge at 4th edition

By Robin Jumper

KAUAI, Hawaii - (September 2, 2012) - The 4th Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon featured nearly 2,000 participants finishing in beautiful Poipu Beach on Sunday morning. Kauai residents led the charge with 553 runners, the most ever in the event's four-year history. Beyond great local participation, the race proved to be a world class destination event as it featured 1,829 participants represented by 45 states, Puerto Rico and DC, as well as 15 countries.

The men's Marathon was controlled from the beginning by defending champion Tyler McCandless, missing his own course record by 32 seconds and finishing first in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 54 seconds. McCandless, 25, from Boulder, CO battled hills, slim competition and high humidity to grab his second victory. Jorge Maravilla of Vallejo, CA was a distance second in 2:37:56.

After his win McCandless said, "Last year I came to the Garden Isle of Kauai with a goal of winning the race. I ended the day with a win and course record. Today, I ran as best I could and came up just off my course record, but did not come up short of an incredible experience. The aloha spirit of the race is unrivaled, and I'm very proud to be a two-time Kauai Marathon champion."

On the women's side, Brett Ely, 32, of Natick, MA smashed the women's marathon course record by just over 24 minutes finishing in 2:46:05 (fourth overall). She was challenged by recent San Francisco Marathon champion, Devon Crosby-Helms, who finished second, clocking 2:49:30.

Post-race, Ely stated, "This was the most challenging marathon course that I have run, but the most rewarding. The community support and aloha along the course was amazing with event volunteers, as well as residents in neighborhoods cheering on the runners."

Both Marathon champions just missed a piece of the Grand Hyatt Kauai $15,000 Speed Challenge, a financial incentive for any male runner finishing under 2:23:19 (course record) and / or any female runner under 2:45.

The men's Half Marathon was won by Troy Harrison of Waterfall, PA with a time of 1:15:17, while the women were led by repeat champion Emily Shertzer of Jonestown, PA in 1:21:22. Both Harrison and Shertzer were part of the Team National Guard, which had more than 80 runners in the event.

Kauai's top finishers were Mark Bogner (3:22:19) and Brook Sugahara (3:23:20) for the full marathon and Jordan Kahawai (1:25:58) and Chelsea Smith-Wishard (1:28:51) for the half-marathon.

Endurance sports celebrity Dean Karnazes and Runner's World's Chief Running Officer Bart Yasso were both on hand for the week's festivities handing out tips and inspiration to all the runners. Yasso believes the Kauai Marathon is one of the best destination events because of the accessibility to his fellow running community through the Expo, pre-race fun run and the finish line party. He loves the personal connections he makes and always looks forward to meeting the people of Kauai.

More than $7000 was generously donated to numerous local non-profit groups volunteering for race day activities. Niumalu Canoe Club, Kalaheo Elementary School, Koloa Elementary School, Kapaa High School Project Grad and the Waimea High School Project Grad are just a few. Other non-profit groups attended the event including Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training and A-T. Collectively they raised more than $270,000 for their respective charities.
