Princeton Men's Track Beats Navy in Ninth Straight Dual

Freshman Stephen Soerens earned three third-place finishes at the Navy Dual.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (1/7/11) - The Princeton men's track and field team defeated Navy 107-71 on Saturday, Jan. 7, winning 13 of 17 events. It marked the ninth straight win for the Tigers at the Navy Dual, as Princeton takes a 21-20 edge in the dual meet series which spans 54 years.

Sophomore Tom Hopkins was a double winner, with victories in the 400 and long jump. He ran 48.58 in the 400 and reached 6.95 meters (22-9.75) in the long jump. Freshman Stephen Soerens was third in three events, setting up to be a great multi-event athlete for the Tigers. He was third in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.59, tied for third in the high jump reaching 1.84 meters (6-0.50) and was third in the long jump at 6.49 (21-3.50).

Senior Ivan Charbonneau won the 60-meter dash at 6.99 and freshman Tumi Akinlawon was the runner up at 7.01. In the 60-meter hurdles, the title went to freshman Rob Mohr at 8.37.

In their first time running the 200 this season, junior Sebastian Steffen won the event with a time of 22.41 and rookie Daniel McCord was second at 22.63.

In the 400, senior Kashif Smith finished in third place at 50.24.

Sophomore Tom Scott ran a PR in the 500 of 1:06.41 to take second and senior Jordan Sawadogo finished right behind in third place at 1:06.60.

Princeton went 1-2-3 in the 800 with junior Peter Callahan taking top honors at 1:51.91. Freshman Bradley Paternostro was second at 1:52.96 and junior Russell Dinkins is third at 1:53.44.

The Tigers did it again the mile with two runners posting personal bests. Senior Joe Stilin crossed the line at 4:07.37 for first place and a PR, sophomore Chris Bendtsen was second with a PR of 4:09.58 and sophomore Alejandro Arroyo Yamin was third at 4:10.24.

A pair of Michaels took the top two spots in the 1,000. Junior Michael Palmisano had a winning time of 2:26.92, while sophomore Michael Williams ran a 2:27.83.

In the distance race, sophomore Tyler Udland and senior Thomas Dialynas [Newport Coast, CA (Corona Del Mar)]both ran PR's in the 3k. Udland won the race at 8:27.10 and Dialynas was third at 8:28.94.

"Newport Coast was a census-designated place until 2001, in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 9,741 at the 2010 Census. The master-planned community was developed by the Irvine Company. Newport Coast was annexed into Newport Beach, California in 2001.

Princeton won the distance medley relay. The relay of Trevor Van Ackeren, Daniel McCord, Connor Martin, Jonathan Vitez crossed the line at 10:02.40, beating Navy by more than 18 seconds.

In the middle of the track, senior Dave Slovenski won his second straight pole vault of the indoor season. He cleared 4.95 (16-2.75) to take top honors.

Senior Patrick Park won the shot put at 15.91 (52-2.50) and freshman Scott Rushton was second at 14.97 (49-1.50).
Princeton's two triple jumpers went 1-2. senior Garner McCloud jumped to 14.47 (47-5.75) for first and freshman Nana Owusu-Nyantekyi reached 13.94 (45-9.00) for second. Also placing in the jumps was sophomore Shane Molidor in the long jump with a second-place mark of 6.68 (22-11), and junior Richard Sheldon was third in the high jump clearing 1.84 (6-00.50).

Princeton will compete at the Armory Invitational next Saturday, Jan. 14.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's track and field team (0-1) fell to Princeton (1-0), 107-71, in a dual meet at Wesley A. Brown Field House on Saturday afternoon. Navy won four events on the day and posted 11 IC4A-qualifying performances. Navy hit IC4A marks in 400m, 500m, 1,000m, mile, 3,000m, 5,000m, weight throw and DMR.

"This is a pretty good meet with a lot of tradition," head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "We like to have this meet right after the kids come back from break so they stay focused on what needs to get done when they are home.

"The guys did a really good job in the weight throw today with [Chris] Ricks and [Kyle] Fortney going 1-2. There were some really good throws today. [Alex] Jackson ran a really good time in the 400m even though he didn't win and [Dominic] Della Pelle had a good race in the 3,000m as well. Now it's time to get back to work and start preparing for Army, Patriot League and the IC4As."

Senior Chris Ricks won the weight throw with a 57-7 (17.55m) and sophomore Kyle Fortney achieved a PR in the event of 53-0 (16.15m) to take second place. Navy's Billy Grammer had the third-best performance in the event with a 51-11 3/4 (15.84m) and Zack Duncavage posted a 49-6½ (15.10m). Duncavage also placed third in the shot put (46-6¼, 14.18m).

Senior Josh Houston won the high jump with a clear of 6-6¼ (1.99m) and junior Rand Montermini was second at 6-2¼ (1.89m).

Junior Joshua Shaw took first place in the 500m run with a PR and IC4A mark of 1:05.14.

Navy's 4x400m relay team took first place with a time of 3:22.34 and the distance medley relay squad of Jacob Fox, Isaac Teichgrab, Ryan Pajor and Ken Bunnell placed second, but hit the IC4A standard with a time of 10:18.91.

Senior Dominic Della Pelle placed second in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:27.19, coming in just .09 behind Princeton's Tyler Udland (8:27.10). Della Pelle was under the IC4A standard for the second time this season in the 3K.

Senior Alex Jackson got under the IC4A cutoff with a time of 49.08 in the 400m dash, as he took second place. The time is his indoor track PR in the 400m.

Sophomore Cody Thompson placed third in the 1,000m run with a 2:28.27 and sophomore Weston Kennedy was fourth at 2:29.06. Both times were PRs and under the IC4A-qualifying mark.

Senior Jeremy Haney was fourth in the mile (4:13.59, IC4A) and junior Kyle Satterwhite was fifth (4:14.82, IC4A).

Sophomore Brett Bogaard ran his best 60m dash time of the season as he placed third with a 7.18. Sophomore Isaac Losee crushed his previous PR in the 60m hurdles with a second-place finish of 8.48.

Sophomore Ryan Kochert and senior Paul Neidhardt each cleared 15-3 (4.65m) in the pole vault to take second and third, respectively. Sophomore Randon McKain set a new PR in the triple jump with a distance of 45-0¼ (13.72m) to place third.

The 5,000m run was a non-scored event, but Christopher Galvin (14:36.08) and sophomore Robert Patterson (14:43.52) went 1-2 in the event and each of their times were PRs and under the IC4A standard.

Navy will return to action next Saturday at Wesley A. Brown Field House when the team hosts a six-team meet.
