Freshman Erik Olson (Stanford) and senior Steve Sodaro (California) had a very close finish at the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Washington.
Both Olson and Sodaro live in Marin County.
Olson finished 11th in 23:49.65 and Sodaro was 12th in 23:50.29. Olson edged Sodaro by just 0.64 seconds. Olson ran 4:47.6 per mile and Sodaro 4:47.8 per mile. Olson led Sodaro by 0.28 seconds at the first split, by 1.55 at the second split, and by 5.58 at the third split.
Sodaro, the Pac-10 steeplechase champion, closed very quickly to almost catch Olson.
Olson also beat Sodaro at the Pre-Nationals at Indiana State on October 16 by 1.6 seconds.
