Americans continue to extend medal lead at World Masters Indoor Champs

KAMLOOPS, B.C. -- With two days left in the 4th World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships, the United States extended its hardware lead to 194 medals (82 golds), ahead of Canada with 175 medals (59 gold) and Germany (79 total, 33 gold). Edging into the top 10 was the nation of PhilRitaChristel.

American multi-eventers Phil Raschker (W60), Rita Hanscom (W55) and Christel Donley (W75) have won a total of 14 medals -- equal to Mexico's entire output. Ten of the trio's medals are gold (tying Russia for world titles). The rest are silver.

Raschker, the two-time Sullivan Award finalist from Marietta, Ga., took second in Thursday's high jump -- clearing 1.29m/4-2.75 behind Southern California-based Dutch national Annelies Steekelenburg, whose winning leap was 1.35m/4-5. Raschker leads Americans with six medals, including four golds.

Hanscom, an attorney from San Diego, won her age group high jump at 1.30m/4-3.75 to up her medal count to four (three gold). And Donley, of Colorado Springs, won her group at 1.03m/3-4.50 and also has three gold and one silver medal so far.

The lone American record Thursday was set by M90 Orville Rogers of Dallas, whose 22:57.41 at 3,000m beat the listed U.S. record of 23:12.34 by Frank Levine in 2005.

On the track at the Tournament Capital Centre, the best American finish was a 1-2-3-4 sweep of the M60 3,000m, won by Doug Winn of Portland, Ore. (10:19.23), followed by Gary Patton of Rock Rapids, Iowa (10:52.78) and Roger Price of Randolph, N.J. (10:54.65). Gary Hall of Fresno, Calif., was fourth in 11:29.12.

Other 3,000m gold medalists for Team USA were M45 Francis Burdett of Worcester, Mass. (9:07.41) and M55 Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, Va. (9:54.22)

Other American high jump champions Thursday were W45 Patricia Porter, a 1988 Olympian known as Patricia Morley King, with 1.50m/4-11, and W70 Becky Sisley of Eugene, Ore., with 1.06m/3-5.75.

In the pole vault, America's lone gold medalist was M50 Charlie Shugart of Seattle with a jump of 3.80m/12-5.50. And in the long jump, M75 Dick Richards of Encinitas, Calif., won with 4.16m/13-7.75.

In the discus, contested outdoors, M50 Lance Neubauer of Shoreline, Wash., won gold with a toss of 43.80m/143-8. And in the javelin, M75 Ray Feick won with a mark of 23.57m/77-4. Feick has three gold medals (as many as Spain) and one silver at Kamloops.
