LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's track and field team has signed five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2010 season, head coach Ron Mann announced Wednesday.

"As the defending BIG EAST Champions we are going to continue to build upon conference and national caliber athletes," said Mann. "The addition of these athletes continues to move us in that direction."

U of L signed yet another stellar class this year, led by thrower Hannah Baker. A Marion, Ill. native, Baker is currently ranked 23rd in the nation in the indoor discus. The senior won the discus throw at the 2009 IHSA State Championship meet and is a three-time IHSA conference and sectional champion. While her personal best in the discus is 152-03, she is also an outstanding competitor in the hammer throw and the weight throw with personal bests of 131-06 and 44-07, respectively. She was named to the 2009 All-South girls track team. Baker brings great depth to the throwing group with the loss of Cardinal team captains Jere' Summers (Berkeley High School; Cal State Northridge) and Lindsey Cook to graduation.

The Cardinals continued their outstanding success in recruiting distance runners by signing Maria Frigo of Union, Ky. The St. Henry District High School product was the 2009 state champion in the 1600-meter run and a three-time champion in the 4x800-meter relay. Frigo finished 51st out of 152 runners in the 5k at the 2009 Foot Locker South regional. Her personal bests include: 17:51 in the 5k, 2:20 in the 800m, 5:11 in the 1600m, and 11:26 in the 3200m.

Louisville also signed jump specialist Kim Cardeiro who hails from Falmouth, Mass. Cardeiro was the 2009 Massachusetts state runner-up in the long jump as well as the third-place finisher at the New England Championships. Her personal bests include: 18-03.50 in the long jump, 25-02.25 in the triple jump, 12.3 in the 100m, 26.9 in the 200m and 9.11 in the 55m hurdles.

Joining Cardeiro in the 2010 class is fellow jumper and multi-specialist Chelsea Lucas. The Lima, Ohio native placed third in the OHSAA State Championship meet in the pole vault and first in both the OHSAA district and regional championships. Her personal bests include: 11-06 in the pole vault, 13-10.50 in the long jump and 57.38 in the 300m hurdles.

Rounding out the 2010 signing class is middle distance runner Jordan Diaz of Leigh, Calif. Diaz finished sixth at the 2009 CIF State Championship in the 800-meter run and is currently ranked 15th in the nation. Her personal bests include: 2:11.13 in the 800m and 5:00.68 in the 1600m.
