NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday that Lincoln University of Missouri was chosen as the 2009 Indoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year and the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year.

Lincoln swept the NCAA Division II women’s indoor and outdoor track and field team championships this year. At the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in March, the Blue Tigers scored a total of 100.50 points to win the team competition. It was a dominant team effort, as the Blue Tigers’ point total more than doubled the score of the second-place team finisher. The title is Lincoln’s third women’s team title in indoor track and field.

Lincoln completed their track and field sweep with the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and field women’s team title in May. This time, the Blue Tigers won a tight team battle over host Angelo State University by a margin of three points. The title marked Lincoln’s sixth women’s outdoor track and field team title in school history.

Lincoln’s women have been equally successful in the classroom, as they boast a 3.132 team cumulative GPA.

Joining Lincoln on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team list were 16 other Division II programs that finished in the top 25 at the Division II Indoor National meet and 12 other teams that finished in the top 25 at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

DIVISION II ALL-ACADEMIC TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS

In addition to the Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Team of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the women’s 2009 Division II All-Academic Track and Field Teams. A total of 64 Division II women’s track and field programs were recognized as 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Teams.

Northern Kentucky University recorded the highest overall team GPA with a 3.678, followed by Pittsburg State which carried a 3.665 team GPA. Slippery Rock recorded the third-highest cumulative GPA with a 3.550 team average.

For the second year in a row, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) landed the highest number of member schools on the list. Eleven of those 64 schools came from the PSAC - California University, Clarion University, Edinboro University, Indiana University, Kutztown University, Lock Haven University, Mansfield University, Millersville University, Shippensburg University, Slippery Rock University, and West Chester University. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which tied for the highest number of schools on the list last year, had 10 schools achieve All-Academic team honors this year.

The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements, with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the respective Division II Indoor or Outdoor National Championships and cumulative GPA.

To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative grade-point average.
