GLENN DAVIS SETS WORLD RECORD

National Collegiate Athletic Association
37th Annual Track and Field Championships
June 13 and 14, 1958
Edwards Stadium—University of California, Berkeley, California
Official Program 50c

Great Duels On Tap
How does it feel to shatter a world record and still lose?
Ask Texas’ Eddie Southern. He became the second man to ever break 50 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, and he lost the race. The first man to ever go under the 50-second mark was Ohio State’s Glenn Davis, and he did it some two-tenths of a second before Southern.
In this 1958 National Collegiate meet, Southern and Davis will renew their 1956 rivalry. This time the event will be the 440—with no hurdles.
Earlier this year the Texas junior broke the National collegiate quarter mile record with a 46.1 race, also around a pair of turns.
Then the Buckeye senior blasted off to a 45.8 timing, equaling Jim Lea’s world record. Southern has since retaliated with two 45.9s.
In Saturday’s finals, Southern will be trying to reverse the emotions on Davis, and find out how it feels to break a world’s record and win.
