Boudreaux, Carpenter Named 2016 National High School T&F Coaches of the Year

NEW ORLEANS — Since its inception in 2014, the National High School Track & Field Coaches of the Year Award has recognized the best of the best in the prep ranks.
From Michael Fields and Dave Turnbull two years ago to Aaron Berndt and Carmen Jackson in 2015, outstanding efforts on the high school level have not gone unnoticed.
This year the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) is pleased to announce that Pete Boudreaux of Catholic High School (Louisiana) and Jeff Carpenter of Bishop Kelly High School (Idaho) have been respectively named the Boys and Girls National High School Track & Field Coaches of the Year.
Boudreaux, in his 30th year as head coach of the Bears, led his team to their fifth consecutive Louisiana State High School Athletic Association Class 5A state title.
Catholic High rolled through the regular season and captured the district and regional championships on its way to qualifying 14 athletes in 15 events for the state meet.
It was in Baton Rouge where the Bears outscored runner-up Archbishop Rummel 96-42. Catholic High had four individual state champions and scored in every event in which it had an athlete entered. As an aside, only the top six places score in Louisiana’s Class 5A (10-8-6-4-2-1), so 96 points is no small feat in 15 events.
Carpenter’s Knights were another bunch that dominated its state meet.
This past May, Bishop Kelly High — in its fifth year under Carpenter’s tutelage — steamrolled the competition at the Idaho High School Activities Association Class 4A Championship Meet. The Knights scored 164.5 points, 82 more than the runner-up.
Bishop Kelly High qualified athletes in every single individual event, as well as each relay and scored in all. The Knights earned individual state titles in the discus throw and 100 hurdles, while their 4×100 an 4×200 relays finished ahead of the pack, too.
Boudreaux and Carpenter were selected by an esteemed panel from the original pool of state-by-state winners of the High School Track & Field Coaches of the Year.
