Jaide Stepter set a school record in winning the women's 400m and was part of the winning 4x400m relay, Eric Sloan won the triple jump, Tera Novy the women's shot put and Nick Ponzio the men's shot put during the final day of action at the New Mexico Classic held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. today (Feb. 6). "This weekend we put more elite marks on the board," said USC Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert. "Although we still had some athletes back in L.A. nursing nagging injuries both teams are coming together and competing at a high level. The jumps groups were outstanding and the throwers threw some indoor PB's. The 400 groups ran great races despite a couple of poor lane draws. The sprinters are showing improvement and beginning to execute properly. Despite the challenging altitude in New Mexico our distance runners never allowed it to be a distraction. How can anyone argue with Top 10 U.S. performances?" The senior Stepter led USC to a 1-2-3 finish in the women's 400m race with a PR and school indoor record of 52.30. Her time broke the school record of 52.47 set by Akawkaw Ncha-Ndip in the semifinals at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships. Junior Amalie Iuel was right behind her with a PR and Norway national record of 52.73, followed by sophomore Kendall Ellis with a season-best time of 53.42. They were all in the same heat and all of the other college runners ran 55.0-plus. Entering action this weekend, Stepter's time would move her in to second, Iuel would move to fourth and Ellis would remain 10th on the NCAA indoor 400m list this season. Stepter's time also would put her second on the U.S. list entering action this week. Ellis, Iuel and Stepter were joined by sophomore Deanna Hill on the 4x400m relay and they won the event by 11 seconds with a season-best time of 3:31.48. Their time was the second-fastest by a college quartet this indoor season. The junior Sloan continues to impress during the indoor season winning the men's triple jump with a PR of 54-2.75 (16.53m), six feet farther than the next closest collegian. His jump moves him to second on the NCAA descending order list. Sophomore Dominic Smallwood placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 47-6.50 (14.49m). Novy, a senior, won the women's shot put competition with a season-best mark of 49-7.00 (15.11m). Right behind her in second place with a PR of 49-1.50 (14.87m) was junior Tanya Sapa.
