NEW ORLEANS – A new team ascended to the top of the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Team Computer Rankings, but by no means is that team unfamiliar with the view from above.

Reigning men’s indoor champion Adams State surged past preseason No. 1 Grand Valley State to the top of the men’s rankings, while the No. 1 women of Lincoln (Mo.) just narrowly fended off GVSU in the latest edition of the rankings announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Distance running is what Adams State is known for, and it’s precisely what boosted the Grizzlies to No. 1 this week with 193.73 points. Not only did Sydney Gidabuday, Dominic Cabada and Jackson Sayler overtake the top three spots on the 3000-meter qualifying (after altitude conversions), but ASU also took positions 21, 23, 24 and 30 in the event.

On top of that haul, Adams State’s distance medley relay squad checked in at No. 2 in the country. In total, ASU accounts for 15 performances ranked top-30 national in events longer than 800 meters and the DMR.
And it wasn’t just the endurance athletes contributing to the 100-point improvement from a week ago; sprinter Jurgen Themen moved to No. 3 at 60 meters and Zach Baxter climbed to No. 6 in the shot put.
For its part, No. 2 GVSU also improved nearly 30 points from a week ago to 172.44 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Grizzlies.
The National Team Computer Rankings formula works by assigning more points to higher-seeded athletes/relay teams in each event and sums the totals of all of each teams’ athletes (it is not analogous to the NCAA points scoring system). Only marks from the current season are included.
To make room for Adams State and Grand Valley, Tiffin (136.93) dropped a spot to No. 3, while No. 4 Saint Augustine’s (134.72) and No. 5 Minnesota State (116.76) held steady. Adams State’s distance runners displaced enough of No. 6 Colorado Mines’ (102.20) athletes in the rankings that the national cross country champion Orediggers dropped three spots from a week ago.
Meanwhile, the Lincoln (Mo.) women (165.27) were only able to maintain a marginal, three-point advantage over a surging No. 2 Grand Valley State squad (162.39) that rolled out a number of its top-flight distance runners. The Lakers got top-six efforts out of Kendra Foley, Gina Patterson and Amy Cymerman – as well as the No. 5 4×400 relay – to jump 42 points from a week ago.
GLIAC rival Hillsdale (129.45) also got great production out of its distance corps to move up four positions to No. 3. Emily Oren added a DII-leading mile to a collection that already included the fastest 3000 of the year, while Kristina Galat is close behind at No. 2 in both events. The duo combined to drive last year’s national runner-up Chargers a 35-point boost from last time.
No. 4 Pittsburg State fell two spots from last time but remains just behind Hillsdale at 128.40 points, and Lewis (105.65) just held off New Mexico Highlands (103.92) for the final spot in the top five. NMHU improved seven spots from last time with Salcia Slack taking the national leads in the triple jump and pentathlon, and the No. 3 rank in both the long jump and 60 hurdles.
Reigning national indoor and outdoor champion Central Missouri fell two spots to No. 11.
Central Missouri’s men made the biggest top-25 jump for either gender with a 16-place move to No. 16, while the Pittsburg State men improved 12 spots to No. 14.
New Mexico Highlands tied No. 24 Queens (N.C.) for the most significant move of the women’s ranking at seven spots.
